encounter between crime victims and relatives of those detained

the demand for punishment more humane and respectful of the rights

Friday, May 21, 2010, 9:30 to 16:30 hours, House of Imprisonment Padova

When it comes to crime victims who are immediately think the offense has suffered directly or to his family, do not you think almost never to the families of prisoners. Yet, very often the crime is also down with violence on wives, companions, children, parents of those who has committed the crime, and destroys their lives: there are people who have had to change his name to avoid being implicated as " relatives of ... 'wives who found themselves out of the blue with her husband in jail, and then no longer the primary source of livelihood of the family, aging parents forced for the first time, perhaps after a life of honesty, to pass through the doors of a prison.

But the first victims are the children, those children who struggle to forgive their parents abandoned them, because in fact the imprisonment of a father or a mother to Their is also a departure. Those children who can be ruthless judges, whose opinion, however, no prisoner held and no one ever dares to question.

establish contact between family members of detainees with their suffering and people who have suffered a crime, invite them to a meeting and a confrontation could lead to an important step in a path to "break the chain of evil," but also for break the isolation of the prison and restore the fine line of contact between the prison and the outside world. If the families of the victims say they do not feel "compensated" by the suffering of the families of offenders, if they were the ones who feel it is misleading to say that all of potential victims, like many media encourage us to do, and do not ever try instead to see the reality with the eyes of the enemy, "not to justify, but to understand, perhaps the climate of hatred, resentment, social discomfort for "the other of us" would cool, and perhaps finally begin to think that hate can not come to no good.

"I do not want to talk about forgiveness, but I'm interested in everything that can break the chain of evil, but not an archetypal Evil with capital M, but the evil that is within us all and which circulates in everyday life "Blessed are the words of Tobago, where an armed terrorists killed his father. And it is important that victims like her are willing to risk their suffering available to all to "break the chain of evil," and meet the families of detainees for asking different punishments, which have a sense that people do not crush that should serve, enabling them to save the feelings and dignity.

But the sense of a day of studies that bring together victims and families of detainees is all in the testimony of Silvia Giralucci:

"My father was killed by the Red Brigades when I was three years old and I have no memory direct. His death, at 29 years, was such a devastation in the family, my mother, to find some so the strength to go forward, he decided to quit his pain to himself, and not to speak of him. I was eight years old when he told me, in the way you can explain to a child, that father was killed for his ideas. But it took more years, so many, to accept his death, and even today, remains within me a sense of anticipation, a strong desire to see him back in some way.

Then a few years ago has happened to the prison theater workshop of "Tam Teatromusica" has organized an evening at the theater Maddalene. The prisoners, with a special permit award, presented their show at Padua. As a journalist, present at the tests, when I realized that in the courtyard in front of the theater one of the detainees players lost time playing among children. I found it strange, and asked information. I was dumbfounded when I explained that these children had the first chance to see their dad out of jail and to play with him. I realized then that our company, the company of the righteous, to those kids was inflicting the same punishment that was imposed on me, and that they, too, absolutely innocent, the signs of that would lead to deprivation for the rest of their lives. That perspective tipped me no more left. This experience was fundamental in what I tried to be and do. Even at work, I always try to dig underlying reasons, and also to understand the motivations of those who feel different from me. "
